How To Look After Your Duvet

Good quality duvets are expensive, filled with luxury goose down they should last for at least 10 years or more if properly cared for. Duvets should not ideally be washed as some washing machines can ruin the fillings. Many high street commercial laundries do not understand how to look after your quilt and cannot understand why you are so disappointed when they ruin your investment. Some duvets are sold as all seasons, this is where two duvets of different TOG ratings can be used separately or together to give you the ideal temperature settings in both winter and summer. Normally you get a 4.5 TOG summer quilt and a warmer 9 TOG duvet that can be used in both autumn and winter, the two combined makes a super warm 13.5 TOG which is ideal for those really chilly months around December, January and February.

Good storage is essential if you only use your duvet at certain times of the year, most manufacturers supply them in a handy storage box but if this is not the case then you will need to purchase a good quality bag with a zipper to keep out the dust and moisture. Just before you store any items give them a good shake and air them out for 24 hours so they smell fresh before going into the airing cupboard for the next few months.

All bedding should be kept dry so a good place like a linen cupboard or linen box is essential as they allow good circulation and prevent the build up of moisture and dampness which can affect your duvet and makes it smell which is not ideal. Once the fabric is affected it is near impossible to remove the smell completely unless is it fully washed and dried which is not good for the fibres and natural down. Try to use a place that is not subject to different levels of both warm and cool climates, excess heat can make the filling dry out and become less effective at removing moisture from the body when you sleep, cotton also dries out when exposed to different heat levels. Also think of where you store the bedding, if you are in the country garages and attics may not be ideal as they are a haven for small insects and if you are unlucky you could have a winter mouse infestation. They would make a bee line for your quilt as this also offers them the best protection from the cold weather.

Once you have stored the duvet and now want to use it again, try to take it out a few days before you wish to use it and air it out on a washing line if possible, the air will revitalise the fillings making them fresh again. A good shake is all that is needed to make the duvet plump and ready to do its job once more. In order to keep it clean, use a good cotton duvet cover and wash this weekly, not only will this protect your duvet but it will also help keep dust mites at bay which are a menace to allergy sufferers. The same applies to summer weight duvets that are made from pure cotton, the fillings react to light, heat and moisture in the same way so it is good practice to look after your quilt from day one. Some of our Hungarian goose down duvets can cost a small fortune but the benefits of a good night’s sleep are well worth the investment.

Nimbus Goose Down Duvets

European sourced down is well documented as being some of the finest, lightest and most efficient, so look for a good quality manufacturer that gives you the correct information such as Fill Power, source of Filling, complies to UK BS manufacturing codes, ethical farming policies and good environmental practices, as some of the cheaper duvets use harmful chemicals in the cleaning process and they also use caustic bleaches in order to make the filling pure white. A good thing to remember is that there is no such thing as a pure white goose or duck so if your fillings are ultra white you can bet that they have been bleached which will make the feathers and down brittle. Spend wisely and invest in your sleep, you only live once.

Summer Duvets

Luxury DuvetsIs now really the time to change your duvets, February is nearly over and the question on our minds is, is summer nearly here? The last few weeks have been mixed to say the least, one minute is it warm and you are glad that you got out your light summer weight duvet and the next it is raining and feeling a little too cold in the middle of the night, but is now a good time to buy an All Seasons Duvet where you can benefit all year round from the different combinations or is that too much hassle?

We are now finding that most duvet users opt for a good quality natural goose down duvet with a middle of the range tog rating such as a 9 TOG or 10.5 TOG as the better the down the better it is a keeping the body’s temperature correct. Look out for FILL POWER Ratings, the higher the better as this will give you a good idea of how good the duvet will be at keeping you warm and snug and equally as important – cooler!

This is where the ALL SEASONS Duvet comes into its own, offering two duvets of differing tog ratings which can be used separately or together to give you the right amount of coverage depending on the differing temperatures. As you will agree there are no such certainties when trying to predict the great British weather.

We would also recommend the use of a premium pure Goose Down Duvet as this will give you years of lasting use and quality, light and extremely comfortable whatever the weather.

One of the best value for money options you can buy are the feather and down duvets choosing from either goose down or duck down. Both are natural fillings and offer good levels of warmth and comfort but are not as light as the pure down duvets.

One of the questions is whether to choose from a goose down or duck down filling, what are the differences and why is there a big price difference?

Well, there are several factors here, mainly duck down is more readily available than goose down and the feathers and down are more oily on the duck than on the goose which gives the goose-down a much higher fill power rating, as duck down is much harder to clean and remove unwanted grease spots.

Goose Down is much whiter in appearance and both downs will give you a good level of warmth and are light enough to release trapped warm air allowing you to cool down in the warmer months. Once again FILL POWER is one of the most important factors when choosing the right down.

Mattress Toppers

We sell an extremely good range of mattress toppers ranging from the anti allergy microfibre versions up to the premium quality 100% Duck Down Toppers. The range is very diverse and creates lots of questions as to ‘which is the right mattress topper for me’ .

The standard mattress toppers are filled with super soft and light fillings wrapped in smooth cotton cases, they provide extra comfort for a tired and sagging mattress or ease the pain of a very hard orthopaedic style mattress. In more recent years technology has moved on and more and more customers now require a little bit more posture control as a good quality mattress topper is still a fraction of the cost of a replacement mattress. This is where the two chamber design comes into its own. The bottom chamber is filled with more compacted type fillings like goose feathers or duck feathers, this base offers a rigid feel and is less likely to sag or dip and follow the contours of the existing mattress and offer a more stable platform. Resting on top of this is the luxury layer, the better quality you use here the more comfortable the topper will be. Filled with 100% Pure down, it is like resting on a soft fluffy cloud and you sink in to the down – heaven! Couple the two together and you have the best of both worlds, complete posture control and a super soft layer to rest your weary body on.

Pure Duck Down Mattress Topper

This topper offers unparalleled levels of comfort as you sink down into it soft layers. This will make even the hardest mattress feel soft and sensuous, this will feel like you are staying in the finest hotels where comfort and relaxation is everything.

We also sell a great range of synthetic mattress toppers just in case natural fillings are not for you, there are several advantages to this type of filling like being excellent for children and those who suffer from allergies and they are extremely light and hard wearing.
