This is a really good question, mattresses are way too big to be dry cleaned or machine washed. You can vacuum your mattress and this will remove some debris, dust and a small amount of dust mites but the vacuum cleaner could also stain the fabric if it is not completely clean when you use it.
So the best option is to cover it with a good quality cover that you can easily clean in the washing machine, this can be done as frequently as when you change your fitted sheets. The best option we have found is the cotton quilted mattress protectors as they also offer some extra comfort and cushioning between you and the mattress cover.
For younger users and the elderly, you can use a good quality waterproof mattress protector as they offer better protection from any spillages and staining. Modern waterproof backings are now fully breathable and are not as hot as they once were making them ideal for all year round use.
For protection from dust mites and bed bugs, the protectors are ideal as the close weave and extra quilting makes it impossible for them to travel through the material giving you improved protection where you need it the most.
Protection from dust mites can also help alleviate some more common allergies such as asthma and skin conditions like eczema.
Waterproof mattress protectors also reduce allergy symptoms by reducing the ability of mould to grow in a mattress. Mattress protectors that can be easily disinfected are commonly used in children's nurseries and health care facilities.
