When you think of Toile de Jouy, a generally busy pastoral theme such as a couple having a picnic by a lake or an arrangement of flowers spring to mind.
Toile, as it is more commonly known, is a type of decorated pattern consisting of a white or ivory background on which a repeated pattern depicts a fairly complex design.
Mainly associated with fabrics like bedding, curtains and upholstery in particular.
Toile can also be used on a wide variety of fabrics which are more commonly found in country houses or at large themed garden parties.
Toile designs were originally produced in Ireland around the mid-18th Century and quickly became popular in Britain and France.
The name Toile de Jouy originated from France at the latter part of the 18th century, the phrase literally means cloth from Jouy-en-Josas, a town in the south-west suburbs of Paris.
Although the designs have been around for many years, Toile has experienced a marked upsurge in demand and designers have been recently experimenting with toile-patterned duvet covers, bedspreads and matching curtains to create the perfect bedding vista for your bedroom.
