What is Jersey Cotton?

What is Jersey Cotton and why do you use it for the Electric bed fitted sheets? Well basically electric beds move and stretch when you operate them and you need a fabric that will move with the contours and shape of the mattress.

Jersey Cotton Fitted Sheets for Electric BedsOnly a knitted cotton can do this whilst being super soft and comfortable to sleep on. Jersey cotton is really low maintenance, doesn’t need ironing and can be washed on a low setting. It is super absorbent and keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter, well that is our short answer. This type of knitted fabric has been in use for a very long time in the clothing and bedding industry. It is so versatile, it can be used in almost any product that comes into contact with the body. Sometimes it is mixed with other yarns such as elastane and lycra, whilst this is good for your sports clothing we would only recommend 100% Jersey Cotton when using it for fitted sheets as cotton is a cooling fabric that absorbs sweat from the body keeping you at a good temperature while you sleep. If you use other fabrics they may not have the same properties or even make you hotter in bed, so pure cotton is key when using it on your mattress.

So what is difference between normal woven cotton sheets and knitted cotton sheets I hear you ask? Well traditional sheets are woven, they have a thread count that has a warp and a weft. It is the amount of time that the yarns criss cross over each other that creates a woven fabric, this cannot be stretched or pulled too tightly, they are perfect for covering mattresses that do not move. Now Jersey cotton is not like this at all, it is still 100% cotton with all the benefits of luxury yarns but it is knitted, meaning the fabric meanders in a path and forms symmetrical loops, similar to those created while knitting. Loops, as opposed to crossing warp and weft yarns can be stretched in different directions, which gives knit fabrics the elasticity it’s known and loved for.

This creates a very soft and versatile fabric, if you have children, look after your elderly parents or if you yourself spend a lot of time in bed then this fabric is perfect for you. It helps with bed sores and absorbs excess sweat, one of the many reasons we use it for our electric bed fitted sheet range. This natural cotton textile will not irritate sensitive skin or cause any allergies.
